President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden brought festive joy to patients and their families during their annual visit to Children’s National Hospital on Friday. The event, filled with warmth and holiday spirit, also featured an unexpected star—a playful toddler in a light blue jumper.
The Bidens spent time visiting privately with patients and their families, posing for photos, and sharing words of encouragement. In the hospital’s atrium, Jill Biden took center stage to read the holiday classic ’Twas the Night Before Christmas to a group of children.
The president sat beside her in a matching red chair, his attention captured by a lively toddler. As Jill read, Biden played a lighthearted game of catch with the child, making funny faces and coaxing the toddler to sit briefly on his chair.
“Reading and entertainment,” Jill quipped with a smile as she finished the story, drawing laughter from the audience.
President Biden then addressed the children, offering a message of hope and reassurance during what can be a difficult time for families. “Keep the hope,” he said. “You’re in our prayers, you’re in our thoughts, and thank you for letting us join you.”
The Bidens’ visit continues a cherished tradition that dates back to First Lady Bess Truman, who began the practice of bringing holiday cheer to children too ill to be home for Christmas. Jill Biden has made this visit an annual event during her time as first lady, and President Biden has accompanied her every year.
This consistent presence has not gone unnoticed. “We’ve never had a president join for four years in a row straight, so you have set a high bar,” Michelle Riley-Brown, the hospital’s president and CEO, told Biden, expressing gratitude for his dedication.
The event was more than just a routine visit; it underscored the Bidens’ commitment to connecting with families facing challenges during the holiday season. By combining lighthearted moments with heartfelt encouragement, the president and first lady reminded everyone at the hospital of the power of compassion and hope during the holidays.
