During his final week in office, President Joe Biden signed proclamations on Tuesday establishing the Chuckwalla National Monument and the Sáttítla Highlands National Monument, safeguarding over 800,000 acres of land in California.
The ceremony, originally planned to take place in California, was relocated to the White House due to the destructive wildfires in Southern California.
Speaking in the East Room, Biden reflected on his administration’s efforts to combat climate change. “We’ve been carrying out the most aggressive climate agenda ever in the history of the world,” he declared. He emphasized the importance of preserving natural landmarks, calling them “the heart and soul of our nation.”
Biden recounted his early commitment to conservation, referencing an executive order signed during his second week in office. The order established a national goal to protect 30% of U.S. lands and waters by 2030 as part of the “America the Beautiful” campaign.
Over the past four years, Biden noted that his administration has made significant strides toward this goal, conserving hundreds of millions of acres across the country. “I’m proud to have kept my commitment to protect more land and water than any president in American history,” he said.
The newly designated Chuckwalla National Monument encompasses over 600,000 acres in the California desert near Joshua Tree National Park and the Colorado River. This monument will preserve critical habitats and public lands, ensuring long-term environmental protection.
Meanwhile, the Sáttítla Highlands National Monument protects more than 224,000 acres in Northern California across the Modoc, Shasta-Trinity, and Klamath national forests. The monument safeguards tribal ancestral homelands, rare flora and fauna, scientific and historic treasures, and key water sources.
Biden’s announcement marks the culmination of his administration’s aggressive conservation agenda.
From New England to Alaska, his presidency has prioritized creating new national monuments, restoring degraded lands, and ensuring vital natural resources are preserved for future generations.
As President-elect Donald Trump prepares to take office on Monday, Biden’s legacy will be defined, in part, by his extensive conservation efforts and dedication to addressing climate change.
This final act underscores his commitment to environmental stewardship and protecting the nation's natural heritage.
