President-elect Donald Trump, accompanied by his family, arrived in Washington on the evening of January 18 to participate in inaugural celebrations. These events will culminate in his official swearing-in ceremony at the Capitol building.
The Trump family traveled from Palm Beach, Florida, to Washington aboard a military aircraft provided under the orders of President Joe Biden. At Palm Beach Airport, two planes awaited Trump's delegation. One was "Trump Force One," a private jet owned by the Trump Organization featuring its signature deep blue and red livery. The other was a government Boeing 757-200 adorned with the "United States of America" insignia in white and sky blue.
Eric Trump and his wife, Lara, boarded Trump Force One, while President-elect Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, their youngest son Barron, and Ivanka Trump with her husband Jared Kushner traveled on the government aircraft. The nearly three-hour flight landed at Washington Dulles International Airport without incident.
Karoline Leavitt, a spokesperson for Trump’s transition team, announced the trip’s purpose on social media platform X. She stated, “The President-elect and First Lady departed Mar-a-Lago for Washington to embark on a great journey of bringing success to our nation.”
The Boeing 757-200 used for the flight shares design similarities with Air Force Two, which typically transports the Vice President of the United States. This aircraft is also employed for the travel of the First Lady, cabinet members, and other senior officials as needed.
It is a long-standing tradition for sitting U.S. presidents to provide government aircraft for the president-elect’s travel to Washington for the inauguration. President Trump followed this practice in 2017, traveling to Washington aboard a government plane for his own inauguration.
However, this tradition was notably disrupted in 2021. President Biden initially planned to travel to Washington by train but altered his plans due to Secret Service concerns following the January 6 Capitol riots. The Trump administration did not extend an offer of government aircraft to Biden’s team, compelling the Bidens to charter a private plane to Washington. Furthermore, Trump broke with custom by refusing to attend Biden’s inauguration.
For Trump’s current inauguration, President Biden underscored the importance of maintaining traditional protocols. He instructed his administration to fully cooperate with Trump’s transition team to ensure a smooth process.
Upon arrival in Washington, Trump is scheduled to visit his golf club in Sterling, Virginia, located in the suburban outskirts of the capital. There, he will host approximately 500 guests for a celebratory event featuring a fireworks display and musical performances. The entertainment lineup includes Leo Days, an Elvis Presley impersonator, and Christopher Macchio, an opera singer who has performed at multiple Trump political events.
On January 19, the day preceding the official inauguration, Trump will hold a rally with his supporters at the Capital One Arena in downtown Washington. This rally is expected to draw a significant crowd, showcasing Trump’s enduring influence among his base and setting the stage for the formal proceedings the following day.
