The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), renowned as one of America’s top universities, has announced a groundbreaking policy to make its education more accessible.
Starting next fall, undergraduate students from families earning less than $200,000 annually will receive tuition-free education, a decision that will benefit 80% of incoming students. Families earning under $100,000 will receive additional support, covering not just tuition but also housing, dining, fees, and allowances for books and personal expenses.
MIT’s bold move addresses one of the greatest challenges in higher education: affordability. With tuition for the 2022-2023 academic year at $57,986—far above the national private university average of $39,400—many students face financial barriers to accessing such a prestigious education.
MIT President Sally Kornbluth highlighted the importance of removing these obstacles, stating, “The cost of college is a real concern for families across the board. We’re determined to make this transformative educational experience available to the most talented students, whatever their financial circumstances.”
This initiative reaffirms MIT’s commitment to inclusivity and merit-based admissions. Unlike many institutions, MIT does not consider a student’s ability to pay when evaluating applications.
Furthermore, students receiving aid are not required to take out loans, and the university avoids giving admissions advantages to the children of alumni or donors. Stu Schmill, MIT’s dean of admissions and student financial services, emphasized the importance of this policy in attracting the brightest minds.
“We believe MIT should be the preeminent destination for the most talented students in the country interested in an education centered on science and technology, and accessible to the best students regardless of their financial circumstances,” he said.
