Governor Tim Walz, who ran as Kamala Harris’s running mate in the 2024 election, described losing the race as “pure hell.” In his first interview since Donald Trump’s November victory, Walz reflected on the pain of defeat, the challenges facing Democrats, and the controversial actions taken by Trump in his first week back in office.

Speaking with MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow, Walz was asked about Trump’s policies, particularly his freeze on federal funding. The Minnesota governor did not hold back in his response. “You know that overused phrase about the frog in boiling water? We’ve been in the damn pot way too long,” he said. “To the voters, I get it. Everyone’s exhausted. Trust me, I understand.”

Walz admitted that losing the election took a personal toll. “It was pure hell—the disappointment, the frustration. I’m soul-searching,” he said, acknowledging the deep frustration shared by many Democrats.

He also looked back at what he, Harris, and their party could have done differently to prevent Trump’s return to power. “We knew this was coming. We knew the implications. And they’re throwing so much at us that we’re fatigued.”

Despite the loss, Walz urged Democrats and Americans to stay engaged and not allow political exhaustion to weaken their resolve. He warned that the consequences of Trump’s leadership were already becoming evident through his first wave of executive orders.

Within days of taking office, Trump signed multiple orders targeting social policies. He mandated that all federal agencies recognize only two genders, revoked diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs across the federal government, and reinstated a ban on transgender individuals serving in the military.

But the most immediate shock came when Trump announced a freeze on all federal loans and grants. The decision caused widespread alarm, as it affected institutions and programs that rely on federal funding, including universities, food assistance programs, nonprofit organizations, hospitals, and community health centers.

A federal judge temporarily blocked Trump’s plan, but the uncertainty over funding remains.

Walz expressed deep concern about the funding freeze, calling it a deliberate attack on crucial public services. “A huge chunk of what our society does depends on that funding,” he said.

“It’s the backbone of basic support systems, and they’re cutting it off.” He warned that failing to resist these policies could push the U.S. toward an economic and social system where power is concentrated among the wealthy elite.

“There are societies where the rich and oligarchs control everything, where fabulously wealthy people live above the law, and the rest of us just exist,” Walz said. “That’s not the America we’re supposed to be.”

He urged Democrats to step up their opposition, calling on leaders and citizens alike to push back against Trump’s policies. “We have to find our voice. We have to push back,” he said, emphasizing the need for immediate political action.

While some Democratic leaders have already vowed to challenge Trump’s executive orders, Walz stressed that public engagement is just as important. He encouraged Americans to stay informed, speak out, and hold their representatives accountable.

“This is not the time to disengage,” Walz warned. “This is the time to organize, resist, and fight for the values we believe in.”

His comments reflect the broader concern among Democrats that Trump’s policies will rapidly reverse progressive gains made over the past decade. Many view his recent executive actions as the first steps in a larger agenda aimed at dismantling civil rights protections, weakening social safety nets, and consolidating power within a conservative framework.

Trump’s supporters, however, argue that his policies are necessary to restore traditional values and fiscal responsibility. Republican lawmakers have largely supported his moves, framing them as essential to protecting American families and ensuring government efficiency.

They claim that restrictions on gender-affirming care, cuts to diversity programs, and limitations on federal spending are necessary to prevent what they see as government overreach.

Despite these arguments, opposition to Trump’s policies is mounting. Civil rights groups, advocacy organizations, and Democratic state officials have already begun filing lawsuits to challenge the administration’s actions.

Several Democratic attorneys general have pledged to fight the federal funding freeze in court, arguing that it unlawfully restricts resources allocated by Congress.

Walz remains firm in his stance that resistance is necessary to protect fundamental rights and prevent further erosion of democratic principles. His message to Americans is clear: stay engaged, fight back, and don’t let exhaustion lead to complacency.

“We’ve been through tough times before,” Walz said. “But giving up is not an option. If we let this continue, we’ll wake up in a country we don’t recognize.”

With Trump’s administration moving quickly to implement sweeping policy changes, the battle over the direction of the country is already underway. Whether through legal challenges, political activism, or grassroots movements, opposition forces are preparing for what could be a prolonged struggle to counteract Trump’s agenda.

Walz’s words serve as both a warning and a rallying cry. In his view, the next few years will test the resilience of American democracy—and only by standing up and fighting can those who oppose Trump’s vision hope to shape the future.
