Trump Expresses Confidence in Hegseth’s Confirmation: ‘Pete is Performing Well Now’

In a recent exclusive interview with NBC News, President-elect Donald Trump expressed strong support for his nominee to lead the Department of Defense, Pete Hegseth.

Trump, who appeared on "Meet the Press" on Sunday, affirmed that Hegseth is in a strong position to be confirmed as Secretary of Defense, despite weeks of scrutiny and concerns raised by both lawmakers and former Pentagon officials.

“Pete is doing well now,” Trump told NBC’s Kristen Welker, addressing the earlier doubts about Hegseth’s candidacy.

The former president acknowledged that some had been skeptical, given Hegseth’s youth and relatively short political career, but he emphasized the nominee’s impressive background. “He’s a young guy, with a tremendous track record actually,” Trump added.

Hegseth, a former Fox News host, has faced criticism over several issues, including reports of sexual assault allegations and concerns about his drinking habits. These matters have led to a degree of uncertainty among some senators, especially within the GOP.

However, Trump firmly defended his nominee’s qualifications. He highlighted Hegseth’s educational background, noting that he had attended both Princeton and Harvard, where he was a good student. “He loves the military, and I think people are starting to see it,” Trump said.

The former president seemed confident that Hegseth would ultimately secure the necessary votes to lead the Department of Defense.

“A lot of senators call me up saying he’s fantastic,” Trump stated, further bolstering his faith in the nominee’s chances.

Despite this optimism, there is ongoing resistance from some GOP senators. NBC News reported that six Republican senators are currently questioning Hegseth’s suitability for the position, citing the previously mentioned allegations.

Trump addressed these concerns, particularly the allegations regarding Hegseth’s drinking, asserting that he had spoken with people close to Hegseth who assured him that the claims were unfounded. “I’ve spoken to people that know him very well, and they say he does not have a drinking problem,” Trump asserted.

In addition to Trump’s vocal support, Vice President-elect JD Vance has also thrown his weight behind Hegseth, helping to facilitate one-on-one meetings between the nominee and key lawmakers on Capitol Hill.

These efforts are intended to give Hegseth a chance to address any lingering concerns and further solidify his standing.

Hegseth himself has remained resolute throughout the process, making it clear that he would not back down despite the challenges. He has expressed his commitment to the position and his belief in his qualifications to lead the country’s top security agency.

As the confirmation process continues, Hegseth’s nomination remains a point of contention.

However, with backing from President-elect Trump and influential figures like JD Vance, Hegseth is pushing forward with confidence in his ability to navigate the challenges ahead.
