Donald Trump, sworn in as the 47th President of the United States on Monday, wasted no time targeting his predecessor Joe Biden. During an indoor parade at Capital One Arena in Washington, Trump mocked Biden’s claim that he could have beaten him had he stayed in the 2024 race.
“We had to beat two opponents. We had to beat Biden, and we beat him,” Trump said, drawing boos from the crowd when he mentioned former Vice President Kamala Harris. Mimicking Biden, he added, “The guy was like 39 points down — ‘I think I could have beaten Trump. They should have left me in, I could have beaten.’”
Earlier this month, Biden told USA Today he believed he could have defeated Trump in November, citing polling data that he claimed supported his assertion.
However, by the time Biden withdrew from the race in July, he was significantly trailing Trump in national and battleground polls. Biden’s withdrawal followed mounting pressure from Democrats concerned about his age and poor performance in a June debate against Trump.
Trump capitalized on this during his remarks, saying, “His debate performance wasn’t the best, that’s what killed him.” After signing several executive orders during the event, Trump quipped, “Could you imagine Biden doing this? I don’t think so.”
Earlier in the day, Biden and his wife, Jill, greeted Trump and First Lady Melania Trump at the White House for tea. The couples then traveled together to the Capitol by motorcade for the inauguration ceremony.
Following Trump’s swearing-in, the Trumps escorted the Biden family to a helicopter that took them to Joint Base Andrews, marking the official transfer of power.
Biden, in a brief departure statement, said, “I’m proud of the work we’ve done, even if it’s not always been appreciated. I wish President Trump the best and hope he’ll serve the country well.” His measured tone contrasted sharply with Trump’s mocking rhetoric.
Trump’s inauguration day showcased his combative style and emphasis on action. He criticized his predecessors, reaffirmed his pledge to restore America’s standing, and energized his supporters.
The stark contrast between Biden’s quiet exit and Trump’s assertive entrance highlighted the ongoing division in American politics as Trump begins his second term.
