During his inauguration speech on Monday, President Donald Trump announced plans to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America,” a move that drew both laughter and controversy.
Seated behind Trump among other political figures, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton laughed audibly as Trump revealed his intentions.
“America will reclaim its rightful place as the greatest, most powerful, most respected nation on Earth, inspiring the awe and admiration of the entire world,” Trump said after being sworn in. He continued, “A short time from now, we are going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the ‘Gulf of America.’
Additionally, we will restore the name of a great president, William McKinley, to ‘Mount McKinley,’ where it should be and where it belongs.”
Trump’s proposal, previewed by his aides earlier in the day, also included renaming Mount Denali back to its previous name, Mount McKinley.
The announcement came as part of his broader agenda to reinforce national pride and reassert American influence.
However, the plan to rename the Gulf of Mexico has already faced pushback. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum criticized the idea during a press conference earlier this month, saying, “Obviously, the Gulf of Mexico is a name recognized by the United Nations, an organism of international standing. But what’s next? Calling it ‘Mexican America’? It sounds absurd, doesn’t it?”
The longstanding rivalry between Trump and Clinton, dating back to the 2016 presidential election, added another layer of drama to the moment.
Clinton, who has been a vocal critic of Trump since his victory, appeared amused by the announcement.
The renaming proposals have sparked mixed reactions from political figures and international leaders, further underscoring the divisive nature of Trump’s second term and his bold approach to rebranding American geography.
