Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, tragically lost his life in an incident in Midtown Manhattan on Wednesday morning.
The event occurred just before 7 a.m. outside the Hilton hotel on 54th Street, between 6th and 7th Avenues, as Thompson, 50, was arriving for an investor meeting.
According to the NYPD, a masked individual who had been waiting for Thompson carried out the attack, injuring him in the back and leg before fleeing the scene on a Citi Bike.
Thompson was rushed to a nearby hospital but could not be saved. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch revealed that the suspect had arrived at the location five minutes before Thompson and waited behind a parked car.
Once Thompson arrived, the individual approached, fired several rounds, and escaped through an alley before riding off on the Citi Bike via Central Park.
Witnesses described the chaotic scene. “I heard a loud noise,” one witness told PIX11 News. “When I looked around, I saw a man with a weapon. He fired three times, then ran.” Surveillance footage captured the suspect holding the firearm and fleeing the area.
Police have yet to recover the weapon but did find a phone in the alleyway used during the escape. A $10,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest.
Thompson’s wife, Paulette Thompson, told NBC News that her husband had received threats in the weeks leading up to the incident. “I just know that he said there were some people that had been threatening him,” she shared.
Despite this, police have not identified a motive and are investigating Thompson’s hotel room for clues. A key witness who was near Thompson during the event has yet to be identified by authorities.
The NYPD has urged New Yorkers to remain vigilant, though Chief Jeffrey Maddrey reassured the public that they can continue their daily routines safely.
The tragic event has left UnitedHealthcare and its parent company, UnitedHealth Group, in mourning. In a statement, UnitedHealth Group expressed deep sorrow over Thompson’s death. “We are deeply saddened and shocked at the passing of our dear friend and colleague Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare.
Brian was a highly respected colleague and friend to all who worked with him. We are working closely with the NYPD and ask for patience and understanding during this difficult time. Our hearts go out to Brian’s family and all who were close to him.”
Thompson joined UnitedHealth Group in 2004 and became CEO of UnitedHealthcare in 2021. Before leading the company, he oversaw its government programs, including Medicare, and previously worked at PwC.
The incident occurred on the same morning as UnitedHealth Group’s annual Investor Conference, held at the Hilton. The event, scheduled to run until 11 a.m., was cut short by UnitedHealth Group CEO Andrew Witty, who announced the decision at 9:09 a.m., citing the seriousness of the situation.
The Hilton hotel expressed its condolences, stating, “We are deeply saddened by this morning’s events in the area and our thoughts are with all affected by the tragedy.”
