Jean Rather, Artist and Beloved Wife of Dan Rather, Passed Away at 89: A Legacy of Love, Art, and Strength

Jean Rather, a celebrated artist and the devoted wife of legendary journalist Dan Rather, has passed away at the age of 89. Jean, described by her family as a "rock of true Texas grit," left an indelible mark not only on those who loved her but also on the countless lives she touched through her art and unwavering spirit.

Jean’s passing was announced on Tuesday, November 26, through a heartfelt statement on Dan Rather’s official Facebook page. She passed away peacefully at their home in Austin, Texas, after battling cancer.

“She had been on hospice care for some time, but the news still comes as a shock for those of us who knew and loved her,” the post read, reflecting the deep loss felt by her family and friends.

Born and raised in Texas, Jean graduated from Smithville public schools and began her career in Houston, where she met Dan Rather while working at a radio station.

Their partnership became the foundation of a nearly 67-year marriage that spanned the globe. Together, they navigated life’s many chapters, living in cities such as Dallas, Washington, D.C., London, and New York, before returning to Texas in 2021.

Jean was not only a devoted wife and mother but also an accomplished artist. Her work, described as both vibrant and soulful, was displayed at colleges and galleries across the United States.

While she carried herself with a modest demeanor, her artistic contributions were profound and celebrated, embodying her love for life and her creative spirit.

Throughout her life, Jean was a steadfast pillar of support for her family. During Dan’s demanding journalism career, which often took him away from home for long stretches, Jean became the glue that held their family together.

Dan recalled her resilience and devotion during an interview last year, saying, “The first year I was with CBS News, I was home 41 days out of the year. Very hard to hold a marriage and a family together then.

But Jean’s fighting heart was our saving grace. She always said, ‘Whatever it takes, we’re going to make it work.’”

Jean’s ability to balance her roles as a mother, grandmother, and friend was unparalleled. She was a constant source of comfort and encouragement, attending every game, celebrating every achievement, and being a confidante to her children and grandchildren. Her love for her family was boundless, and she made every moment count.

Beyond her family, Jean’s warmth and grace left a lasting impression on everyone she met.

Whether interacting with world leaders, artists, or neighbors, she carried herself with a stunning smile and a sense of ease that made her unforgettable.

In their tribute, the Rather family described Jean as a woman who "lived a full life as an incredible wife, mother, friend, and artist — and a true Texan." Jean’s legacy continues through her husband Dan, their children Danjack and Robin, her grandchildren, and the extended Rather family.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked for donations to be made to the Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders in Austin, an institution that reflects Jean’s dedication to inspiring future generations.

Jean Rather will be remembered not only as the loving partner who stood by Dan Rather through his storied career but also as a remarkable individual in her own right—an artist, a mother, and a beacon of strength and love.

Her life was a testament to the beauty of creativity, resilience, and devotion, and her memory will forever be cherished by those fortunate enough to know her.
