President-elect Donald Trump expressed his respect and condolences for former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away on Sunday, acknowledging Carter’s dedication to improving the lives of Americans during his presidency.

In a Truth Social post on Sunday afternoon, Trump reflected on Carter’s legacy, describing the presidency as an “exclusive club” that few can fully comprehend.

“I just heard of the news about the passing of President Jimmy Carter,” Trump wrote. “Those of us who have been fortunate to have served as President understand this is a very exclusive club, and only we can relate to the enormous responsibility of leading the Greatest Nation in History.”

He commended Carter for facing the challenges of his presidency during a critical period in U.S. history and working tirelessly to better the lives of all Americans. “For that, we all owe him a debt of gratitude,” Trump added.

In a subsequent post, Trump elaborated on his respect for Carter despite their political and philosophical differences. “While I strongly disagreed with President Carter philosophically and politically, I also realized that he truly loved and respected our Country and all it stands for,” he wrote.

Trump acknowledged Carter’s dedication to making America a better place, praising his efforts both during and after his presidency. “He worked hard to make America a better place, and for that, I give him my highest respect. He was a truly good man and, of course, will be greatly missed,” Trump stated.

Trump also highlighted Carter’s influence after leaving the Oval Office, noting that his post-presidency work was more consequential than that of most presidents. He extended his “warmest condolences” to Carter’s family on behalf of himself and his wife, Melania Trump.

“Warmest condolences from Melania and I to his wonderful family!” Trump wrote, urging Americans to keep the Carter family in their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Carter, who passed away in Plains, Georgia, at the age of 100, was the longest-lived president in U.S. history. In February 2023, the Carter Center announced that Carter had entered hospice care after a series of hospital stays, opting to spend his remaining time at home with his family.

Carter served as the 39th president from 1977 to 1981, leading the nation during a tumultuous period marked by the Iran hostage crisis, oil shortages, and high inflation. Despite these challenges, Carter’s dedication to humanitarian efforts, both during and after his presidency, earned him respect across the political spectrum.

Trump acknowledged this in his post, calling Carter’s work to improve America “admirable” and expressing appreciation for the former president’s legacy.
